Bariatric Journey

Packing for Your Bariatric Surgery Hospital Stay

Packing for your bariatric surgery is a key step to make sure your hospital stay is as smooth and comfortable as possible. To help you remember all the essentials, we’ve created this checklist that covers everything from must-have documents to personal items that will make your recovery more pleasant.

Must-Not-Forget Items

These essentials will ensure that your hospital admission goes smoothly and that you’re ready for your stay:

  • Identification (passport, driver's license, or other ID)
  • Medicare card
  • Health fund card or insurance details
  • EFTPOS card or cash
  • Current medications (in their original packaging)
  • Relevant medical paperwork (doctor’s letters, x-rays, scans)
  • Mobile phone, tablet or laptop
  • Charger (long charging cable preferred)
  • Water bottle
  • Your favourite cordial (makes drinking water easier)
  • Glasses or contact lenses
  • Hearing aids (if applicable)
  • Walking aids (walking stick, if needed)
  • Ear plugs (to block noise during your stay)
  • Your copy of our Bariatric Surgery Binder

Personal Comfort Items

These items aren’t essential, but they will make your stay more comfortable. A small, secure bag is a good idea to keep your personal items safe.

  • Loose pyjamas and dressing gown
  • Underwear and socks
  • Slippers (easy to slip on)
  • Pillow (from home, if preferred)
  • Shower thongs
  • Eye mask (to help with sleep)
  • Travel mug or cup
  • Toiletries:
    • Lip balm
    • Toothbrush and toothpaste
    • Soap or body wash
    • Deodorant
    • Moisturizer
    • Hand cream
    • Sanitary items (pads, tampons)

Entertainment Options

Recovery can take some time, so having items to keep you occupied is important. Bring activities that are light and enjoyable:

  • Headphones (for music or audiobooks)
  • Books or magazines
  • Crosswords, sudoku, or puzzles
