August 2024 Bariatric Support Group Meeting: Shared Stories and Support

Southwest Bariatrics Support Group August 2024

Our second Bariatric Surgery Support Group meeting was held on Monday 5th August 2024 in the Education Hub at The George Centre, Gregory Hills. It was another fantastic evening with 35 people in attendance, and once again, the room was filled with kindness, encouragement, and connection.

A Story That Inspired Us All

One of our attendees kindly volunteered to stand up and share her personal journey. She spoke about how she first began considering weight loss surgery, her decision to proceed with a gastric sleeve, and the emotional and physical challenges she experienced during the early stages and in the years following her surgery. Hearing her story was incredibly powerful. Many people related to her struggles and triumphs, and it reminded us all of the importance of community support. We hope to hear many more personal stories in future meetings.

Tasting, Talking, and Connecting

This month, we offered attendees the chance to try protein samples and chocolate calcium balls generously provided by BN Healthy. We also enjoyed a fresh fruit platter prepared by The George Centre, creating a welcoming space for conversation and connection.

We held another lucky door prize giveaway, with a selection of items kindly donated by BN Healthy. The prize winners chose from:

  • An insulated protein shaker

  • A month’s supply of multivitamins

  • A pink stainless steel water bottle

Movement and Motivation

We were also joined by Ashley, an exercise physiologist from Southwest Wellness Centre in Narellan. Ashley presented exercise programs specifically designed for people who have had or are preparing for bariatric surgery, including sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass. Her advice was practical and encouraging, especially for those who are unsure how to start moving again after surgery.

Looking Ahead

Thank you once again to everyone who came along and contributed to another successful evening. The support group continues to be a safe, positive place for patients at all stages of their bariatric journey.

We welcome all patients, whether you have already had gastric sleeve surgery, are recovering from gastric bypass, or are just starting to explore your options. Partners and support people are also encouraged to attend.
