Our bariatric surgery support group meeting was held on Monday 18 August 2025 in the Education Hub at The George Centre. We were delighted to welcome a very special guest speaker, Renata Wosik, a Registered Psychologist with extensive experience supporting bariatric patients.
🧠 The Psychology of Weight and Eating
Renata gave an engaging and insightful talk about the psychological factors that influence weight loss, weight gain, and everything in between. Drawing on years of experience working with bariatric patients, she explained how our mindset and emotional history can have a powerful impact on eating behaviour.
Key topics discussed included:
- Emotional eating, stress eating, and eating out of boredom – how these patterns can lead to weight regain
- How childhood experiences can affect our relationship with food as adults (e.g. being forced to finish meals or having parents who were constantly dieting)
- The impact of undiagnosed ADHD and addictive personality traits on eating patterns and weight control
- What to expect during a psychology appointment and how therapy can support long-term success after surgery
Renata’s session was eye-opening, and many group members found comfort in learning that these psychological challenges are both common and manageable with the right support.
